Belknap Crater stands today as one of the few Holocene-era (11,700YA - Present) examples of the process which built the High Cascade Platform during the Pleistocene (2.6 million - 17,000YA). This crater is small shield volcano - a type of volcano built almost entirely out of fluid magma flows. Usually large in size and low in profile, shield volcanoes are caused by the highly fluid lava they erupt, which travels farther and accumulates in broad sheets, building the shield volcano's distinctive capped form. Belknap Crater is now a dormant volcano, its last eruption being in 480CE.
